Hubert has been with Mark’s solo band for as long as we can remember. Hubert is known as the “H-Bomb” for his bombastic, hard-driving, funky rhythms and heavy beat. One of the modern “Kings of Funk,” Hubert cut his chops as the drummer for “The Godfather of Soul”—the immortal, James Brown. He also spent time as the drum stylist with the famous southern-funk band “The Bar-Kays.”
Hubert has the entire Grand Funk Railroad catalog of songs committed to memory and can immediately perform any of the vintage music, including complicated drum solos, as originally recorded. His drum work is amazing and engineered to duplicate the sound of all the favorite tracks from the old days!
In addition, Hubert has recently been featured as lead vocalist on some of the original Grand Funk tunes. Seeing and hearing the drummer singing some of the original songs, in a full-throated deep voice, seems to represent what fans expect to see and hear from Mark Farner’s American Band. Furthermore, this provides Mark some time to “work the stage” in the style fans expect to see!
We love you H-Bomb, and we look forward to many years of hard-driving funk!
Multi-talented Detroit Artist Paul Randolph, aka “Randolph”, comes from a musical family. As a result, he began honing his musical skills at an early age. A versatile musician who plays guitar as well as percussion, bass guitar is the instrument that Randolph focused upon and “fell in love with”.
Paul has performed with such greats as Fela’s drummer, Tony Allen, Odetta, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Dennis Coffey, Johnny Johnson, and George Clinton, to name a few. He was lead vocalist and bassist for the Detroit-based New Orleans-style funk and blues band Mudpuppy. All through his career Paul has recorded and released numerous compositions many of which charted in local markets.
In late 2019 Paul was requested once again by legendary producer Bob Erzin (Pink Floyd, Kiss, Lou Reed, Alice Cooper), to record bass on the second upcoming Alice Cooper EP to be released in the summer of 2020. Most recently he was hired as bassist and background singer for Mark Farner’s American Band, who formerly founded Grand Funk Railroad. His 2020 productions will include two new singles with jazz flutist Hubert Laws, as well as other solo releases and features. In addition to his musical talents, Paul is also a voiceover artist in good standing with SAG/AFTRA, and has done national spots for the likes of McDonalds, and Corona Beer.
Bernie Palo has been a lifelong “Detroiter” and has been the local go-to guy for all things keyboard. Bernie is a virtuoso keyboardist and musical director for Bob Segar’s longtime sax player, Alto Reed. Bernie is proud to join Mark Farner’s American Band as a touring keyboardist. Bernie enjoys the challenge of the Craig Frost keyboard work from the old years, and has fun doubling keys with Mark when needed on certain numbers.

Welcome, Bernie! We love your style.
We are proud to include Dusty D’Annunzio’s guitar work and backing vocals as a part of Mark’s more relaxed acoustic guitar live set. Dusty is Canadian by birth and grew up in the clubs of Windsor and Detroit playing funk, blues, and rock ‘n roll. In addition to making a living as a gigging live musician, he has been active in instrument design, releasing a signature model guitar called ‘The Revelator’ with Dalbello Guitars.
Dusty has produced other artists and performed for years as a studio session musician for all types of music. He co-produced a documentary film ‘The Border City Music Project’ alongside film maker Jon Gillies. It was this film work where Dusty’s abilities caught the eye of associate producer Mark Farner. Dusty has also written and recorded with the Canadian bands Big Sugar, Wide Mouth Mason, and the late American songwriter/guitar legend Dick Wagner.
Dusty’s soul is evident as he adds important live riffs and fills and doubles Mark’s guitar work for all the early Grand Funk tunes. These songs translate beautifully to an acoustic guitar set as most early Funk songs were written by Mark on his vintage wide-body Guild guitar.
Thanks Dusty for helping present the original Grand Funk Railroad and Farner songs as they were first written! We love your work!
