Rock Legend Mark Farner To Receive Award At Vietnam Veterans of America ’s National Leadership Conference
( WASHINGTON , DC )–Mark Farner, the former lead vocalist, lead guitarist, and principle songwriter for the iconic rock band Grand Funk Railroad, will receive the President’s Award for Excellence in the Arts at VVA’s National Leadership Conference on Saturday, August 14, in Orlando , Florida . The honor will be presented at the conference’s final event, the Awards Banquet, at the Rosen Centre Hotel, the site of the Leadership Conference.
Best known for their mega-hits, including “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home),” Grand Funk Railroad was one of rock music’s most successful groups, playing to enormous crowds and selling more than 30 million records from the late sixties to the early eighties. “We are honoring Mark Farner for his life’s artistic work and for his strong support of America ’s veterans,” said John Rowan , VVA’s National President. “That includes a memorable appearance at our 25th anniversary commemoration of the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington in 2008.”
The Leadership Conference brings together hundreds of Vietnam veteran advocates from around the nation who will take part in four days of seminars, meetings, and other activities. Opening Ceremonies will be held Wednesday, August 11.

Lyrics For Life is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to make a difference the fight against pediatric Cancer. It was founded by Sister Hazel front man Ken Block in memory of his younger brother Jeffrey, who ultimately lost his four-year battle with Cancer.
The charity unites musicians and celebrities for concert events, auctions and other fundraising efforts. The monies raised are donated to groups that are working to find a cure as well as those aiming to enrich the lives of patients and their families. From research to summer camps and family support groups, we are surrounding this disease and conquering it from every angle.
Artists participate in many ways, most often by donating handwritten lyrics to one of their songs on anything from a simple sheet of paper, to a surfboard to any kind of unique item. We then frame or mount it beautifully and offer it for sale in one of our Lyrics For Life auctions.
Our team of musicians, volunteers, sponsors and supporters are proud to set our goals for the future high. We accept the challenge of finding new ways to raise money, awareness and sensitivity, to help make each day a little brighter until there is a cure.

LYRICS FOR LIFE DAY
For several years, we\'ve had a dream at Lyrics For Life to organize a single day event where folks from all over the country would gather in unique ways to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer. To that end, we are proud to announce the first annual LYRICS FOR LIFE DAY to be held on Saturday, September 19th, 2009.
In recognition that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we are challenging you set one day aside to help spread the word and make a difference in our fight against Pediatric Cancer. We are also hoping that you will have some fun in the process. Our idea is simple - gather with your friends, family, community and local businesses to do something that raises awareness and funds.
It can be anything; the possibilities are only limited by your imagination. It\'s not too late to help make a difference, so start thinking and send us YOUR ideas. While no idea is too small (every donation truly does count), we are thinking big - our goal is to have events happening in ALL 50 STATES on L4L Day! FLINT, Michigan — Attention rock fans: Grab your Grand Funk gear.
Thursday, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Flint Native and former Grand Funk guitarist Mark Farner will be at PD's Pub in Grand Blanc Township to sign autographs and just hang out with fans.
"I encourage people to come out and bring their old memorabilia and things like that," co-owner of PD's, Dave Donahue, said.
The event, which Donahue describes as a "meet and greet" won't be the last chance for fans to see the rock star -- who will be receiving a special honor while he's here.
At 5 p.m. on Friday, Farner will be at the new 501 Bar & Grill in downtown Flint to receive the key to the city, presented by Flint Mayor Dayne Walling.
Farner was originally scheduled to receive the key on Thursday at PD's, but Flint Revival, Inc. President Lynn Sorenson, who is organizing the concert, said Walling wanted to present the key in within the city.
"I wanted to do something to recognize his contribution to the city," Walling said. "It's important for today's kids to see that people from Flint have gone on to do great things all about the country and the world."
The Saturday begins at 10 a.m. and will feature a new local band every hour until 7 p.m., when Farner will take the stage.
Keys to the City, 6 - 7:30 PM
On Thursday Aug 13th Mark Farner will make a pre-performance appearance location TBA shortly. Mayor Dyane Walling will present Mr. Farner with a Proclamation and key to the City of Flint in recognition of his contribution to the music industry and Flint’s affection for him. This will be Mark’s first performance in Flint in 37 Years and he will take the stage at Atwood Stadium at 7PM on Saturday Aug 15th following an all day rock & roll festival brought to you by Flint Revival Inc. |

Admission to the concerts is free and no advance tickets are necessary. Viewing space will be on a first-come, first-serve basis and people are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. In addition, boaters on the Detroit River are invited to anchor near the riverfront and enjoy the view of the stage from the water.
Refreshments and a variety of food concessions will be available at several locations on the plaza. Outside food, beverages or coolers will not be permitted. Additionally, pre-concert dinner options are available at the GM Renaissance Center’s delectable full service restaurants – Coach Insignia, Andiamo Riverfront, Seldom Blues, River Café, Sweet Lorraine’s and Asian Village. Special promotions will be announced soon.
Convenient parking is available for $5 per vehicle at the GM surface lot at the intersection of St. Antoine and Atwater, adjacent to the GM Renaissance Center. Valet parking is also available at the GM Ren Cen North Lobby on Jefferson Avenue.
WCSX radio personality Steve Kostan will be broadcasting live from all concerts and will interview band members and Detroit celebrities prior to each concert.
